Future Projects

Church Building & Restoration Works
In addition to those shown below there are a number of projects in the early stages of planning. All need to be costed, agreed and cleared in detail by both the local and diocesan Church authorities. As soon as we have firm details on these, we will post them here. Of course as well as these, there are always the unexpected expenses that inevitably crop up when maintaining a very old Grade 1 Listed Building such as our Church.
Interior Redecoration of Nave, Chancel & South Aisle

As well as the damage and deterioration shown in these pictures, the traditional limewash paintwork throughout the interior walls of the church has become discoloured and needs restoration.

The flaking plaster shown opposite indicates that inappropriate materials have been used in previous restorations allowing damp to be trapped in the structure forcing the plaster off over time.

There are several areas that require attention.

The two lower pictures show where limewash has been applied over ancient paintings. Our aim here is to restore the artwork in as sensitive a manner as possible, while retaining the general limewash finish throughout the Church's interior.

In keeping with the building's Grade 1 listed status we shall be required to employ specialist conservators for this work

Costing

These church interior works will be completed in phases by area.

Our provisional estimate is for £30,000. Detailed costings will be posted here as they become available.

Investigative work is planned for 2012

Chancel Ceiling
In the Autumn of 2010 a piece of worm infested wood was found on the chancel floor. Maljons, a specialist timber preservation company, discovered that earlier preventative work against death watch beetle infestation carried out in the 1980s was still effective.
However it is possible there are some beetles lurking in the chancel timbers. The situation is being kept under observation and further preventative work could be required.

Church Hall Building Works, Improvements and Maintenance Plans

Our Church Hall is a widely used and vital Mersea community asset. Although rebuilt in the 1980s it badly needs bringing up to 21st century standards so that it can achieve its full potential. There are 6 projects in the early planning stages and details will be posted here as they become available:

  • Kitchen - outdated, originally for providing hot drinks and snacks, it does not meet food safety reqirements and hardly compares with a domestic kitchen. It now needs to be capable of catering for full meals for more than 60 people
  • Heating system - inefficient, expensive and uncomfortable for hall users
  • Lighting - outdated and poor
  • Storage area and Hall Entrance - requires rebuilding
  • Floor - needs replacing throughout
When the works have been completed the hall will need re-decorating.
Kitchen Rebuild & Refurbishment

The domestic size kitchen is inadequate; too small and under resourced for providing freshly cooked meals for community events.

Not yet started but will be planned with the heating system.

Heating System
The high-level electric radiant heaters are wall mounted around the hall. They are expensive to run and overheat at head level while failing to provide warmth lower down.
