The beautiful, historic Church of St Peter and St Paul has stood in the West Mersea village centre for many centuries and is a well loved landmark for the local community and visitors. The cost in both time and money to preserve, maintain and develop this ancient Grade1 Listed Building is high and it is no longer possible for the congregation alone to fund.

'The Friends of West Mersea Parish Church' is established as a group of interested people from the wider community who wish to support and maintain this wonderful Mersea ancient building, as this requires a long term sustainable commitment. In this way we will ensure that this generation hands the Church on in good order to the next, just as previous custodians have done. 'Friends' organisations have been extremely successful both locally and nationally in achieving these objectives.

Please Help by Signing this Petition to Government!

The Chancellor plans to extend VAT to alternations to listed places of worship. Churches just like ours are almost entirely maintained and developed for church and community use by volunteers and voluntary giving. This change from zero rating for these buildings makes funding affected projects more difficult.

For more information and to sign the Government epetition please follow this link.

Closes on 30 June 2012
